PostHeaderIcon Financial Crisis: More Links Defending the Free Market

From the Objectivist Camp:

Is Rand Relevant? -  by Yaron Brooke – March 14, 2009

Excerpt:

“[Rand's] magnum opus, ‘Atlas Shrugged,’ is selling at a faster rate today than at any time during its 51-year history.

“There’s a reason. In ‘Atlas,’ Rand tells the story of the U.S. economy crumbling under the weight of crushing government interventions and regulations. Meanwhile, blaming greed and the free market, Washington responds with more controls that only deepen the crisis. Sound familiar?”

Who is to Blame? - Interview with Yaron Brooke

Excerpt:

“What we need to do is really make the case to the American people—and I think it’s an easy case to make—that this is not a failure of free markets, this is not a failure of capitalism, but this is a failure of the exact opposite. It’s a failure of the regulatory state. ”

America’s Unfree Market - by Yaron Brook and Don Watkins

Excerpt:

“Decades of “deregulation” and a “hands-off” approach to the financial industry, we are told, have unleashed Wall Street greed. The free market has proved itself incapable of policing the financial sector—a fact so obvious that even Greenspan, the alleged arch-defender of capitalism, could not deny it.”

Let Them Fail - By Amit Ghate

Excerpt:

“… in a free market business failures are not just normal, they’re crucial for the best products and ideas to emerge. Most restaurants fail in their first three years because customers have other preferences. Many mom-and-pop grocers go out of business because Walmart offers better selection and lower prices. Even whole industries–think typewriters, 8-tracks and horses and buggies–vanish because new inventions and competitors arise.

“None of these failures are a problem, nor do they threaten the system. On the contrary, they are an inherent part of the progress which only capitalism makes possible.

“So why would failures in the financial industry be any different?”

PostHeaderIcon Who is Troi Torain? He’s no John Galt.

[NOTE:One of the commenters on this post tells me that the comments by Torain referred to belowwere taken way out of context, that he's been misrepresented in the press, and that his show is actually educational, if edgy. I am not able to do more research onTorain rightaway, but I will when I can, to sort out what's what - August 9, 2006.]

I’ve just been browsing Jim Woods’ ThinkerToThinker blog, andcame across a post about some screwy DJ who goes by the nickname of “Star” (Troi Torain). This guy threatened a fellow DJ’s 4-year-old child (on radio)in a most repulsive way, and then claimed that his philosophy supports such behavior. He claimed that he is a die-hard fan of Ayn Rand andthat her philosophy is his guide.

Anyone who really *is* a die-hard fan of Ayn Rand and an advocate for her philosophy would know straight-away that the things that this guy is reported to have said and threatened is no Objectivist. In fact, if the guy is actually familiar enough with Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism to be a die-hard fan, he’s familiar enough to know that he’s grossly misrepresenting it.

From the DJ’s words and actions, I’d say that “Star” is more like a black hole of nihilism, doing his worst to destroy himself AND to take down the most effective and prominent enemy of nihilism with him.

Thank you, Jim Woods, for your excellent analysis of this misrepresentation. Again, I recommend your post about this to all my readers, especially to those who have never read Ayn Rand and could be mislead by dark-souled dummies likeTroi Torain.

[The following links have been added on August 9, 2006 or later. They will take you to other articles, blogs and discussions about Troi Torain, aka "Star". I'll be adding more as I come acrossarticles that say something different from the pages I've already posted. I've looked for samples of his radio show, but there don't seem to be any online.]

Literary Kicks – ‘Troi Torain Busted, Atlas Shrugs’- The blogger at this address defends Star. Be sure to read the responses as well as the blog post.

Hot 97 Sues- This deals with another uproar created by Star.
